Chameli Ramachandran was born in 1940 at Santiniketan. A child of Chinese and Indian parentage, she was named by Santiniketan’s famous artist and poet-in-residence, Rabindranath Tagore. He named her after the jasmine flower that is popular in the area for its sweet fragrance.

Ramachandran has always been fascinated by nature and this is expressed in all her paintings. She is adept at bringing together Chinese philosophy with flourishing terrain of Bengal’s landscapes.

She brings alive the natural elements on her canvas with ink and metallic pigments. One cannot fail to notice the play of breeze and sunlight on flowers and leaves. A viewer can even listen to the rustling of leaves and the powerful waves crashing against the rocks in her paintings.

The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
