Dipali Bhattacharya was born in Calcutta in 1952. She graduated from University of Calcutta in 1972 and graduated from Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta in 1974.
Dipali Bhattacharya’s ‘Untold Stories’ is an extraordinary bridge between the past and the present. Founded in the magic and mystery of lyrical experiences, her works are affirmations of enchantment, beauty, the extraordinary as well as the mundane relocations, the feminine experience, and much else.
Some of the most evocative works in this show are those entitled The Objects I Live With. Largely monochromatic, these depictions of objects like a candelabrum, a gramophone, a samovar, a telephone, chandeliers and lamps invest the ordinary with an arresting and eloquent presence.
There is an incredible composure about Bhattacharya’s women. This is especially remarkable given that we know they are being pulled in the opposite directions of their own desires (whatever form those may be in) and societal expectations.
