Through The Looking Glass:

Times like ours call for deeper introspection, analysis and decisive choices than ever before. As we look into the looking glass that encapsulates our movement and flashes back its responses to our eyes, we are confronted with familiar images in a new context that gives our known past and ongoing present through works of excellence in art that transform our exercise into a dialogue that was dormant for a while and will go on again.

Among the artists we have chosen are exceptional ones in their field, like Sunil Das, T. Vaikuntam, Sanat Kar, Yusuf Arakkal, Arpana Caur, Chotu Lal, Sisir Sahana and Sanjay Bhattacharya, who have already made their place in the fabric of our contemporary art. Among those who are known for their range and quality of work and are out to make a mark in the near future, are artists like Sarla Chandra, Murali Nagapuzha, Bikash Poddar and Shabir Hussain Santosh. Among our promising contemporaries, we have Somnath Maity, Sudhanshu Sutar and Shiv Lal Saroha, who bring a sense of optimism about the future ahead of us every time we see their latest work.

The range of expression is fascinating too, from portraiture in a neo-realist style, to the tribal, or a high modernist figurative imagery; to animal studies, landscapes and modern expressionist art where the line between the figurative and non-figurative is like the mirror image, reflecting both the surface of the mirror and our inner response to it.

And most of all, there is the satisfaction one has in seeing how creativity and beauty in our art is not limited only to one or two areas of the country. The works in this exhibition are from Kashmir to Kerala and Rajasthan to West Bengal, reflecting how the winds of change, exchange and assimilation, look back at one from so many different traditions that have blended in a critical and symbiotic contemporaneity in which we are living today.

Getting the works together for this exhibition has been both exciting and fruitful for us. We hope seeing them will communicate it to you as well in a concrete form, and generate more optimism, enthusiasm and Joy that we all need today.

We are dedicating this exhibition to two artists, Yusuf Arakkal and Sunil Das who have been associated with Art Pilgrim and whose contribution to our art is unforgettable.
